Mushroom coffee: how to make it yourself
What is mushroom coffee?
Mushroom coffee, or mushroom coffee, is regular coffee with functional mushroom powder or extract added to it. Think of Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, or Chaga. It is one of the most popular ways to incorporate mushrooms into your day, because it fits into a habit you already have: your morning coffee!
Does it taste like mushrooms? Hardly. Functional mushrooms are not mushrooms. Most powders add a light, earthy undertone that pairs well with coffee. Chaga and Reishi are slightly more bitter, while Lion's Mane and Cordyceps are mild.

Basic recipe
For 1 cup · ready in 2 minutes
- 1 cup freshly brewed coffee (about 200 ml)
- 1 serving of mushroom powder (see the packaging for the recommended amount)
- Optional: a splash of (plant) milk, a pinch of cinnamon, or a teaspoon of honey
- Brew your coffee as you usually do: filter, espresso, or French press.
- Let it stand for a moment. Wait a minute so the coffee is no longer boiling.
- Put the powder in your mug and add a little coffee. Stir until it forms a smooth paste so that no lumps form.
- Pour in the rest and stir well again.
- Finish it off with milk, cinnamon, or honey to taste.
Three variants
Creamy mushroom latte
For those who want it soft and creamy, with Lion's Mane or Fantastic 5.
- 1 espresso shot (or 100 ml strong coffee)
- 1 serving of mushroom powder
- 200 ml oat milk
- Pinch of cinnamon
Stir the powder into the espresso. Heat the oat milk and froth it with a milk frother or by shaking it in a sealed jar. Pour the milk over the coffee and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Iced mushroom coffee
Refreshing for warm days, delicious with Cordyceps or Chaga.
- 1 espresso shot or 100 ml strong coffee, cooled
- 1 serving of mushroom powder or the drops
- 150 ml (plant) milk
- A handful of ice cubes
- Optional: a teaspoon of maple syrup
Dissolve the powder in the warm espresso and let it cool. Fill a glass with ice, pour the milk over it, and pour the coffee on top. You can add the drops directly to the cold coffee.
Decaf evening version
For a relaxing moment at the end of the day, with Reishi.
- 1 cup decaf coffee or hot cacao
- 1 serving of Reishi powder or the drops
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- Splash of warm milk
Stir the Reishi and the honey into the warm drink and finish with milk. The honey softens the bitter taste of Reishi.
Tips for the tastiest mushroom coffee
- Powder or drops? Powder adds a bit more body and flavor. Drops are flavor-neutral, dissolve instantly, and are convenient on the go.
- No lumps: always make a paste with a little coffee first. A milk frother or shaker also works well.
- Not boiling hot: let your coffee cool for a minute before adding the powder.
- Stick to the packaging: the recommended daily amount is on the label. More is not better.
- Start mild: new to mushrooms? Start with Lion's Mane or Fantastic 5, which have the mildest flavor.
- Combine: a pinch of cinnamon, cacao, or a little vanilla pairs well with every mushroom.
Frequently asked questions
Can I also put mushroom powder in tea? Yes. It works exactly the same in tea, cacao, smoothies, and even oatmeal.
Can I combine multiple mushrooms? Yes. If you don't want to choose, a blend like Fantastic 5 or Essential 8 is convenient.
Is mushroom coffee the same as magic mushrooms? No. Functional mushrooms such as Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Chaga do not contain psilocybin and are not psychedelic.
How long does a bag of powder last? That depends on the recommended serving size on the packaging. A 200-gram bag usually lasts several months with daily use.
Can everyone use it? Mushroom powder is a dietary supplement. If you take medication, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, consult your doctor first.
