Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) grows on birch trees in the coldest regions of the world: Siberia, Scandinavia, and Canada. On the outside, it is pitch black and cracked, while on the inside it is golden brown. That is why it is also known as 'black gold'. In Russia and Scandinavia, chaga has been drunk as tea for centuries.

Strictly speaking, chaga is not a mushroom, but a sclerotium: a hard mass that grows slowly on living birch trees for years. During World War II, Finnish soldiers even used chaga as a substitute for coffee.
