Cordyceps sinensis originally comes from the highlands of Tibet and the Himalayas, where it has held a valued place in traditional Asian culture for centuries. Today, it is a staple for athletes, runners, cyclists, and anyone with an active lifestyle.

In the wild, cordyceps grows at altitudes of 3,000 to 5,000 meters, emerging from caterpillars underground. In Tibet, it is called yartsa gunbu, 'winter worm, summer grass', and wild cordyceps can be more expensive than gold by the gram. It became truly famous in 1993, when a group of Chinese female runners broke one world record after another. Their coach attributed their success, among other things, to a tonic with cordyceps, although questions about doping later arose. McMyco uses cultivated cordyceps, so it is vegan and free from caterpillars.
